By booking a rental with Hikomoto Limited, the customer agrees to the following Terms and Conditions.

1. Rental Agreement

The agreement is between the customer (the person renting) and Hikomoto Limited.
The customer is responsible for all rented equipment (bikes, helmets, locks, and accessories) from the start of the rental until all equipment is returned.

Equipment must be returned:

  • Clean, undamaged, and by the agreed time

  • In the same condition as at the start of hire

The customer agrees to complete a pre-start check of the bike with photos to document any pre-existing damage.

2. Customer Responsibility

Customers must be at least 16 years old to rent an e-bike.

The customer agrees to:

  • Use the equipment safely, lawfully, and responsibly

  • Comply with all New Zealand cycling rules

  • Wear a helmet at all times, as required by law

  • Secure the e-bike with the lock provided whenever left unattended

  • Inspect equipment before use and report any issues immediately

Riding Restrictions:

  • Each e-bike is designed for one rider only, unless a child seat or passenger pad is fitted for riders under 16

  • E-bikes must not be ridden through saltwater or deep sand

  • NZD $50 cleaning fee applies for bikes returned with sand or evidence of beach use

  • Damage caused by saltwater or sand will be charged at repair or replacement cost

Failure to secure or reasonably protect the equipment may result in the customer being liable for full replacement cost in the event of theft or damage.

3. Safety and Liability

Cycling and e-bike use involve inherent risks, including accidents, collisions, falls, and weather-related hazards.

The customer:

  • Rents and uses equipment entirely at their own risk

  • Is responsible for their own safety and for the safety of any minors or dependents under their supervision

Hikomoto Limited:

  • Is not liable for personal injury except as required by New Zealand law

  • Is not responsible for loss or damage to the customer’s personal property

  • Accepts no liability for damage or injury caused by the customer to third parties, vehicles, or property

4. Equipment Use

  • E-bikes comply with NZTA regulations (maximum continuous power output 300W)

  • Intended for sealed roads and designated cycle paths only – no off-road, beach, or saltwater use

  • Use for racing, sub-rental, illegal activities, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited

5. Security Deposit, Damage Charges, and Late Returns

  • A refundable NZD $250 security deposit will be pre-authorised via Stripe prior to rental

  • The deposit will be released after the equipment is returned and inspected, less any applicable charges

  • Release times are determined by the customer’s bank (typically 2–14 business days)

Customer Responsibility:

  • Customers are liable for damage beyond normal wear and tear

  • Late returns incur NZD $50 per hour per bike

6. Damage & Theft Cover (Optional)

Hikomoto Limited offers two optional insurance tiers:

Option 1: Basic Protection ($15 per bike per rental day)

  • Covers damage or theft up to NZD $250 (excess)

  • Customer pays up to $250, Hikomoto covers the rest

  • Security deposit may be applied toward the excess

Option 2: Full Protection ($25 per bike per rental day)

  • Covers damage or theft with $0 excess

  • Customer pays nothing for covered incidents

  • Lost accessories (keys, helmet, lock) may still incur separate charges

Exclusions and Responsibilities (both options):

  • Cover is void if the bike is used in breach of these T&Cs, including:

    • Riding off-road, on beaches, or through saltwater

    • Riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol

    • Failing to wear a helmet

  • Customer must lock the e-bike to a fixed object using the provided lock whenever unattended

  • Negligence may reduce or void cover; includes:

    • Improper storage

    • Ignoring safety instructions

    • Unsafe operation resulting in damage

7. Identification and Support

  • Valid photo ID may be requested before releasing equipment

  • In case of serious malfunction or accident, stop using the equipment and contact us immediately via:

8. GPS Tracking

All e-bikes are equipped with GPS tracking for security, safety, and operational purposes.

  • GPS data may be used to monitor location, ensure rental compliance, assist in recovery, and verify return times

  • GPS data is not actively monitored in real time except for the purposes above

9. Cancellation Policy

  • More than 24 hours before booking: full refund

  • Less than 24 hours: no refund

  • Inclement weather: Full refund if unsafe weather forecast and notified before pick-up

Refunds processed via Stripe, typically 2–10 business days.

10. Governing Law

These Terms and Conditions are governed by New Zealand law.
Any disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of New Zealand courts.
